What you will do in your working day

Within this role as an Apprentice Civil Engineer, your duties will include:

  • Learning all aspects of civil engineering.
  • Learning to use different types of software.
  • Attending site visits.
  • Following safety standards at all times.
  • Assisting with project plans, technical information and designs for projects.
  • Interpreting drawings and making calculations.
  • Using computer software programmes for drawings (CAD).
  • Assisting with the preparation of calculations.
  • Assisting with reports and projects.
  • Attending meetings with clients.
  • Liaising with various teams within the business, as required.
  • Assisting with all associated paperwork.

The training you will be getting

For the full apprenticeship, candidates will complete:

  • Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard.
  • BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Civil Engineering
  • Level 2 Award in Functional Skills Mathematics.
  • Level 2 Award in Functional Skills English.
  • End Point Assessment (EPA)- leading to EngTech qualification with the ICE for successful candidates.

For the End Point Assessment (EPA) apprentices will undertake a technical project report and discussion, and a professional discussion underpinned by the portfolio.

Apprentices must attend college sessions one day per week at the Ipswich Road campus, located near Norwich city centre.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

This is a great opportunity for someone to learn about all areas of Civil Engineering design and to work on a wide variety of projects. The successful candidate can expect in the future to become a fully qualified technician and supported to become a Chartered Technician with the Institute of Civil Engineers. We would support any successful candidate to complete HNC/ HND courses and university courses in the future should they wish to.

Civil Engineering can offer a long, varied, fulfilling career. The industry is always changing and there are lots of skills to learn with new software and interacting with people on project teams.

Things to consider

You will be office- based, mainly working on CAD to start with. We would then expect you to start learning other design skills such as highways and sustainable drainage design as you progress. We use software such as: Autocad, Autocad Civil 3D, Causeway Flow, Causeway Live design and Infoworks ICM. Applicants should hold grade B/ 5 in GCSE Maths as you will be required to study Maths and Further Maths as part of the apprenticeship qualification. If applicants have achieved a grade 4/ C in Maths, they will need to take an initial assessment before they are accepted on to the course. An additional day will be required at college for Functional Skills sessions. These sessions may run on a different day to the college delivery of the apprenticeship. Applicants who are currently undertaking or sitting GCSEs should include their predicted grades on their application. If successful for this position, you will be offered a conditional place on the apprenticeship, subject to you meeting the entry requirements listed above.
