What you will do in your working day

Whilst studying on day/block release with Burton and South Derbyshire college you are expected to undertake carpentry repairs and maintenance work for the Council and will promote the Councils aims and objectives in the provision of a professional service.

To assist in the provision of a repairs and maintenance service to all South Derbyshire District Councils public buildings including (and not limited to) undertaking plumbing, basic electrical (for example, changing lamps, PAT testing), carpentry, decoration, and general works.

  • Assist in the diagnosis and rectification of core trade related repair requests.
  • To ensure that the quality of work always meets the highest standards, ensuring that the quality of workmanship is one that the council would expect and accept.
  • To deal with requests and queries form colleagues, Councillors, the public and contractors in a courteous and helpful manner.
  • To comply with the Customer Service Code of Practice.
  • Carrying out all other core trade related repairs as instructed by the Mentor/Building Services Manager.
  • Support other trades to deliver a professional and safe maintenance and repairs service.
  • To diligently learn and achieve high standards in practical work-based activities and at college.
  • Respond swiftly to emergency situations and resolve them efficiently.
  • Risk assess and plan each job on site.
  • Undertake all work efficiently and cost effectively, minimising non-productive time wherever possible and reporting any difficulties encountered to Mentor/Building Services Manager.
  • Assist in planning the work including scheduling and ordering of the required materials.
  • To develop an understanding with advising on progress, timescales and costs of maintenance and repairs.
  • To procure all tools, equipment and materials in accordance with the Council’s procurement rules.
  • Maintain tools, plant, and equipment in a clean and workable condition.
  • Maintain accurate records of works undertaken including job tickets and timesheets and other required paperwork.
  • To assist in the monitoring of the Public Buildings Inbox as required.
  • To adhere to and ensure the appropriate compliance with the Council’s Corporate Health & Safety Policy and other regulations.
  • To support, promote and comply with the Council’s Equal Opportunities and Fairness Scheme when undertaking the duties of the post.
  • To respect the sensitivity and confidentiality of any information that they may have access to regarding clients/customers in adherence with the Data Protection policies of the Council.
  • To comply with the Council’s Employee Code of Conduct.
  • Undertake such other duties commensurate with the experience of the post holder and the grading of the post as may be reasonably delegated from time to time.
  • Report any problems found to the Building Services Manager.
  • Learn and develop skills and competencies.
  • The post holder is required to assist in minimising environmental impact in the performance of the role, seek to promote environmental sustainability within area of responsibility and actively contribute to the delivery of the DMU Environmental Policy.

The training you will be getting

  • Level 2 Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship standard qualification
  • Level 1/2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
  • This apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of Work Based Assessment and day/block release. 
  • The programme will culminate in an End Point Assessment, where all the skills and knowledge gained on the apprenticeship will be formally tested.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • Should you successfully complete your college course and attain your level 2 certificate there is potential for a further two-year fixed term level 3 course.
