What you will do in your working day

Main Duties:

  • Manual machining of components using a variety of workshop machinery including lathes, drills, mills & grinders.
  • Machining of cast iron, ferrous iron, brass, aluminium & steel.
  • Use of production jigs and tooling to aid machining process.
  • The use of custom grinding machines to refurbish large diameter flaking mill rolls.

This role will encompass an additional variety of hand skills which also include welding and fitting.

The training you will be getting

  • The learner will be studying the Machining Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard qualification.
  • Day release to West Suffolk College.
  • Potential qualifications include;
    • EAL L3 Extended diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)

       

       

    • Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Machining) (Development Technical Knowledge)

       

    • City and Guilds Machining technician (1273)

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

The apprentice will ultimately end up with a nationally recognized qualification in engineering and upon successful completion a full time role will be offered, subject to company circumstances.

Things to consider

You will ultimately have a level-3 National qualification in engineering at the end of the course. Challenges working in both metric and imperial measurements. Making jigs to overcome machining challenges.
