    The current rates for our engineering apprenticeships are: Year 1 - £12,148 - Year 2 - £16,323 (aged 21 + will receive 3rd year rate) - Year 3 - £TBC. If required a shift premium will be paid on top of these rates

What you will do in your working day

As an Electrical Engineer, you will study the uses of electricity and the equipment for power generation and distribution and the control of machines and communication systems. As a Speciality Steels apprentice, you will learn how:

  • To work safely with electrical equipment
  • Understand electrical drawings
  • Install equipment to a professional standard
  • Fault find and repair a range of electrical equipment

You will work within the Speciality Steels business, which produces high performance alloy and stainless steels designed to meet the detailed and demanding requirements of some of the world’s most challenging markets and industries. Electrical Engineering at Speciality Steels involves multi electrical disciplines which range from high to low voltage systems, preventative maintenance to rapid response for breakdowns and working site service support teams to being part of a specialised department engineering team

The training you will be getting

Level 3 Maintenance Operations EngineeringTechnician Delivered at the StocksbridgeTraining Centre.

Year 1:

In your first year you will:

  • Start modules towards Electrical maintenance and the first year of your BTEC Level 3 in Electrical Engineering
  • Undertake specialist engineering training programme at our on-site training centre at Stocksbridge.

Year 2:

During your second year you will:

  • Undertake on-site working alongside qualified Craftspeople and Technicians
  • Complete a BTEC Level 3 in Engineering
  • Continue to complete your competence portfolio through experience within the work place

Year 3:

Your third year will see you:

  • Working on‐site with qualified Craftspeople and Technicians
  • Complete an end point assessment

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • You can expect to start your career as a team member in a specific department. After that the next step would be to become a Craft Team Member, then onto a Team Leader. After that, there are numerous career paths that you could follow
  • You could become a Maintenance Technician, Engineer and Senior Engineer. Alternatively you might aim to be a Plant Engineer, Works Engineer and Director of Engineering. Alternatively, you might choose to move around different specialisms ‐ from production planning to safety

Things to consider

Your apprenticeship at Stocksbridge, Rotherham or Brinsworth, will include time at college and a training programme that guarantees variety and hands on work. It’s an ideal blend of classroom and ‘on-the-job’ training. The Apprenticeship Programme lasts three years, however this is reviewed every 12 months. Apprentice attachments will rotate every 3 months and apprentices will find themselves at all three South Yorkshire sites at some point within year 2 and 3. The first 9-10 months will be based at Stocksbridge, with rotations thereafter. Please be aware no positions are specific to just one location until substantive positions are offered and most of these positions include shifts/weekend working. Once you have completed the 3 years you will gain an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Certificate Level 3 qualification. Following this you will look to move to a permanent position within Speciality Steels and your 4th year will see you transition into this role.
