What you will do in your working day

Activities within the role:

• Work safely at all times complying with health and safety legislation, regulations, organisational and environmental requirements.
• Check materials conform to specified grades, dimensions and thicknesses identified on detailed engineering drawings.
• Interpret technical drawings (including GD&T), specifications and use templates to mark out, produce and assemble fabricated products to meet the required specification and quality requirements.
• Liaise with internal customers to assist in the design and fabrication of specials, one-offs and prototype work.
• Prepare parts prior to assembly and welding including marking out, oxy-acetylene cutting and the use of saws, radial drills, lathes, mills, hand files, linishers, angle grinders and shot blasting, demonstrating and applying knowledge of material properties and characteristics throughout.
• Set and operate press tool machinery and a range of production equipment to assemble parts prior to welding.
• Carry out free-hand welding of standard production, specials and one-off components using MIG, TIG and Oxy-acetylene brazing on various materials.
• Program, set-up and operate robotic welding machinery.
• Monitor resources and activities throughout the fabrication of products or components, identifying areas for improving the production process where possible.
• Carry out quality checks on component parts and completed assemblies.
• Complete documentation at the appropriate stages of the work activity.

The training you will be getting

Qualifications included:

  • Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship Standard. Company Training Plan & Assessment.
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Development Knowledge (1 day per week for 2 years at college) plus additional days at college completing level 2 foundation competencies
  • Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge) and Development Competence Qualification (workplace)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills - Maths (If required)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills - English (If required)
  • End Point Assessment at the end of the apprenticeship
  • To be able to commute to College which is in Bicester, Oxfordshire. 1- 2 days a week.
