Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
- The apprentice will be working towards the Level 2 Commis Chef Apprenticeship Standard
- College attendance will be at the Colchester Institute - Colchester Campus one day per week during term time
- English and maths qualifications form a mandatory part of all apprenticeships and must be completed before an apprentice can pass through gateway.

Other requirements
The successful candidate must be able to travel from home/college to The Flag – including later night departures from site. There is also free on-shift staff food & discounted food and drink.
About this company
The Flag, Wivenhoe is an 85 cover restaurant and hotel (with 10 rooms). We are part of Black Jacket Group - a full service catering, events and venue management business. Since opening in November 2022, The Flag has gained an excellent reputation for great food and service, which has been fundamental to our success over the 16 months or so. We are fortunate to have a highly experienced and motivated management team who offer excellent support to all our staff, including in development of their own skills.

Our group (Black Jacket Group) also caters for hundreds of events throughout the year, alongside operating our own wedding venue in St Osyth where the successful candidate has the potential to work with incredibly experienced and dedicated chefs to deliver the widest possible variety of food service.
