What you will do in your working day

  • You’ll be on site from day one, and you’ll be working towards gaining a Intermediate Apprenticeship in process manufacturing at Level 2
  • As well as gaining this great practical experience in process manufacturing, regulatory requirements and the safety aspects of the nuclear industry, you will learn key skills such as communication, problem solving and teamworking with the operational areas.
  • You will work within our Oxide Fuels of department at Westinghouse - Springfields learning how each team works together you will also work with our external stakeholders to enable you to gain knowledge on how we work, produce our productm and monitor the process and work with other teams

The training you will be getting

  • Intermediate Apprenticeship in process manufacturing at Level 2.
  • This will include college work and assignments to complete alongside a detailed portfolio
  • We will be supporting you each step of the way, making sure you have the right support to enable you to succeed, this will involve working in a number of departments in Springfields on site at Salwick, Nr Preston
  • Delivery method of training to be confirmed
  • Functional Skills English and Maths available if required

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

You will also have the opportunity to apply for any roles with Springfields/Westinghouse that are available at towards the end of your apprenticeship programme.

About the employer

Springfields is a nuclear fuel production installation in Salwick, near Preston in Lancashire, England. The site is currently operated by Springfields Fuels Limited, under the management of Westinghouse Electric UK Limited, The site has been making nuclear fuels since the mid-1940s. The site is notable for being the first nuclear plant in the world to produce Magnox fuel for a commercial power station. The four main activities carried out on the site are: Production of oxide fuels for advanced gas-cooled and light water reactors, as well as intermediate fuel products (uranium dioxide powders, granules, and pellets) Production of uranium hexafluoride, or "hex" Processing of fuel-cycle residues Decommissioning and demolition of redundant plants and buildings
