What you will do in your working day

Our Aerospace Electrical Technical Support apprenticeship is suited for those who are interested in the theoretical side of engineering - planning, scheduling, design, development & test elements of electrical engineering.

Electrical Engineering, in a helicopter context, covers areas such as electrical, communication, navigation, surveillance and weapon systems.

During the scheme, you will experience a number of placements across the Engineering department, with the ultimate aim of moving you into a final placement area based on business requirements and the skills displayed during the apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship will start with an Induction into Leonardo, followed by a team building event incorporating all Trainee starts. There will also be a Yeovil College Induction to ensure that apprenticeship requirements and expectations are fully established.

The structure of the Apprenticeship programme will be as follows:

Throughout the apprenticeship apprentices may be placed in some or all of the following departmental areas:

Electrical Design:

  • Apprentices will learn and carry out 3D design of electrical cabling/looming to meet the aircraft airframe specifications

Electro-magnetic Environmental Effects:

  • Apprentices will gain an understanding and participate in the clearing of aircraft from an electro-magnetic capability perspective

Manufacturing Engineering:

  • Apprentices will work closely with the aircraft production line, producing the electrical work instructions for the manufacture of aircraft on the build lines

Electrical Manufacturing Centre:

  • Apprentices can be involved in the planning of loom manufacture, designing the form boards to manufacture the looms, manufacture of aircraft looms and continuity testing

Avionics:

  • Apprentices will run the test schedules for the testing of aircraft Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), electrical systems and software on specific test beds

The training you will be getting

Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

Year 1: 

  • Full time at Yeovil College to complete a Level 2 competence qualification in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (practical/workshop based) and start a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (knowledge/classroom based) (this qualification includes mathematics to AS/A2 level)

Year 2: 

  • Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and starting the Level 3 competence (work related) qualification in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent qualification)
  • Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to complete the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering

Year 3: 

  • Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and continuing the Level 3 competence qualification in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent qualification)
  • Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to start the Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Aeronautical Engineering

Year 4: 

  • Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and completing the Level 3 competence qualification in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent qualification)
  • Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to complete the Level 4 HNC in Aeronautical Engineering
