Your main responsibilities within the department will include the following:

  • This is a superb opportunity for you to gain an insight into medical negligence claims. The role will allow you to deal with cases in the NHS or private sector and you will develop your skills and expertise within a supportive team structure.
  • You’ll join a friendly, effective and highly experienced team in a fast-paced area of law where no two days are likely to be the same and no two cases are the same. You will benefit from both face to face and remote working support.
  • The role involves assisting caseworkers with drafting documents, reviewing medical records and reports, and working on the cases we currently have in the team. There will also be research tasks on new and developing law and reviewing case law to help value the cases. Many of the cases are in the pre-action protocol stage, but some do go into the court system.
  • Attending client meetings, conferences with counsel to assist case handlers with note taking and attendance notes.
  • Liaising with experts and third parties where appropriate.
  • Requesting and reviewing documents, information and records.
  • Communicating with clients, other firms of solicitors and third parties by telephone or in writing including taking basic client instructions and providing case updates when appropriate.
  • Achieve time recording and fee income targets to ensure profitable working.
  • Ensuring compliance with the firm’s policies and procedures.
  • Attending appropriate training events as and when required.
  • Conducting legal research as requested by members of the team.
  • Completing relevant administration duties including photocopying, scanning documents, amending documentation, filing, archiving and file maintenance.

The training you will be getting

As a Paralegal Apprentice with BPP, you will complete the Paralegal Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. Additional learning within the apprenticeship will enable you to be awarded a Level 4 Certificate of Higher Education in Legal Services which can afford you exemptions from the first two years of the Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship.

Your apprenticeship shall be delivered by online training from and on-the-job learning.
