A Sports/Leisure Team Member Apprentice (Level 2) is required. The Leisure Team Member Apprentice will be involved in ensuring efficient and effective operation of the Sports Centre. Duties include; fitness instructing, lifeguarding, class instruction, swim teaching, reception work and cleaning duties.

What you will do in your working day

Duties include:

  • To supervise and provide advice to individuals in the gym.

  • To provide instruction in a variety of fitness activities.

  • To provide lifeguarding cover and be responsible for the swimming pool/changing room areas when on duty.

  • To provide sports coaching for school pupils in at least two different sports.

  • To work on the reception counter, taking bookings and providing information about facilities

  • To assist the Sports Centre Manager with such duties as required, for example assisting with the setting up of games, sports areas, etc.

  • To perform daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks to ensure the sports centre remains clean and tidy.

  • To ensure equipment is maintained and correctly set up.

  • To be aware of the duty of care to students at all times.

  • To perform duties in accordance with the School’s Health & Safety procedures and to be aware of Health & Safety issues at all times.

  • Training will be provided as appropriate and necessary to the role and apprenticeship. This includes:

  • Full lifeguard qualification

  • Level 2 Certificate in Fitness or Gym Instruction

  • Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming

  • Additional class instruction courses may be offered as required.

  • Opportunities to become involved in specific sports coaching may also be available.

The training you will be getting

  • Level 2 Leisure Team Member 
  • An IQL Level 2 Aware in Pool Lifeguarding 
  • Swim England Level 2 in Teaching Swimming / STA level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming
  • A level 2 Certificate in Fitness or Gym Instruction 
  • A level 3 certificate in First Aid
  • Functional Skills in maths and English, if required. 

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

On completion of Level 2 Apprenticeship, progressions include: developing Level 3 qualifications including Leisure Duty Manager, Personal Training, Exercise Referral Instructor and Lifeguard Trainer/Assessor.

Sherborne Sports Centre is situated in the centre of the Abbey town of Sherborne. Redeveloped in 2023 it boasts significant facilities including a 25m swimming pool, two sports halls, various studios, a performance gym, a fitness suite, squash courts and a golf simulator. The users of the sports hall are students and staff at Sherborne School and Sherborne Prep School as well as members of the Sherborne Community.
