What you will do in your working day

In the Materials Characterisation lab, you’ll be using and developing analytical techniques to assist in the analysis of raw materials, ready for manufacture. 
Responsibilities will include: 

  • To perform analytical testing as required to ISO or GMP standards
  • To be responsible for the safe and efficient running of specific items of equipment
  • To work on the continuous improvement of existing methods and to evaluate new methods
  • To prepare test reports for clients including summaries and recommendations where appropriate
  • Providing detailed quotes for new business opportunities 
  • To assist in the maintenance of the company Quality Control system and documentation 

In the Physical Testing lab, you’ll be responsibility for providing a materials testing service for Rubber Consultants - this mean working with manufactured materials and products, to understand how they function and perform under different conditions. 
Responsibilities will include: 

  • Prepare and test samples to national and international standards or to client specifications
  • Assist in calibration and performance verification testing
  • Maintain laboratory records both soft and hard forms of test data and the associated reports
  • Prepare test reports from the raw data
  • Assist with the preparation of quotes for new business opportunities
  • General housekeeping duties about the laboratory 

The training you will be getting

Over 21 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at TARRC who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

Functional skills in maths and English (if required).

Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.
