Our mainlaying teams are responsible for renewing and replacing the 40,000km of water mains and sewer pipes found within the Wessex Water region. As one of our mainlaying apprentices you will be working in a team to maintain our water supply and sewerage networks by installing new pipes into the network ensuring that our services can continue.

What you will do in your working day

  • Construct out new mains pipes using both excavation and ‘no-dig’ methods.
  • Install stops taps, fire hydrants and sluice valves on clean water pipes.
  • Install drains sewers, flow control devices and storage tanks for waste-water networks.
  • Learning about mechanical coupling or heat fusing to join pipes together.
  • Working safely to modern highway standards.
  • Using trace and locate equipment.

The training you will be getting

Training will be provided by Bridgwater and Taunton College:

  • Block release basis – 2 weeks every 2 months
  • Residential
  • Classroom and practical
  • On site assessor visits.

On completion of the apprenticeship you will gain the following qualifications:

  • Water Network Operative Apprenticeship
  • SHEA card.
  • Water Hygiene card.
  • Street works.
  • Functional Skills English and Maths if required.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Become a fully qualified Mainlaying Operative on completion of the apprenticeship.
