What you will do in your working day

  • Maintaining and ensuring calibration of equipment
  • Setting and working to a programme
  • Carrying out monitoring/sampling at sites
  • Collection and analysis of data
  • Undertaking routine environmental monitoring at waste      management sites
  • Research of land use in relation to permit applications
  • Ensuring quality and standards of construction are maintained
  • Adhering to safe working practices
  • Writing accurate reports
  • Ensuring records of work, time, and client contact are maintained accurately

The training you will be getting

On-the-job training and assessment will be provided by a mixture of:

  • Induction training
  • Workplace shadowing of colleagues and regular site visits
  • Mentoring via a dedicated workplace coach/mentor and manager
  • Visits to Wiser Recycling sites and shadowing
  • Periodic In-house Training from internal or external resource
  • Self-learning modules and assessments e.g. Health & safety tests
  • 4 years taught elements (plus end of point assessment)
  • Training will be 5 block days every 2 months with face to face delivery at Coventry University.  You will need to travel to, and stay in Coventry and Wiser will pay for your accommodation

Off-the-job training will be provided by Coventry University. You will achieve a BSc (Hons) Environmental Management qualification if you pass all modules. You’ll study using Coventry University’s modern learning environment and supported by their highly experienced tutors. You will have access to their comprehensive library and other fantastic student support services.

  • You will be able to develop at a rate that suits you in line with a clear skills matrix and competency framework, and with the support of an experienced Senior Consultant and the rest of our friendly and knowledgeable consultancy team, who have expertise in a wide variety of environmental areas
  • You will also benefit from coaching/mentoring from our pioneer environmental Apprentice Amaani Mahran, who has developed her skills and knowledge very quickly in the short time she has been with us
  • You will work towards a bright, sustainable future as an Environmental Consultant, choosing the area of work that plays to your strengths and interests, developing your expertise with the backup of your formal studies, tutors and peer group at Coventry University and achieving your Level 6 BSc Environmental Practitioner Degree within around 4 years
  • You can expect your salary to be reviewed regularly, alongside your skills and knowledge development
  • Your first salary review will be carried out after successful completion of a six-month probationary period

Things to consider

There will be a lot of independent travel involved once you get into the role, and you will be expected to travel to client sites to take samples on a regular basis. This can be quite dirty work sometimes, as you might be visiting a landfill, or construction site. You will also be exposed to the weather, be it wind, rain, snow or hot sun.
