What you will do in your working day
- In your first year you will work in our onsite apprentice training workshop where you will gain Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) Units (Foundation Workshop Training) and attend University Centre Weston (UCW) to learn core modules
- In years 2 to 4, you’ll complete a number of placements across the business, with a particular focus on our production environment, where you will learn how we produce the high-quality complex assemblies for which Babcock Mission Systems is renowned. During this time, you will attend university on a part-time basis to complete your BEng degree
- Through the placements in the first 4 years, you should experience almost all the design cycle, and will develop the associated engineering skills. In year 5 and 6 you will be working in your substantive role in an area of the business you want to specialise in
- This programme gives you a broad exposure to our business, including experience in analysis, design, business winning and project management. There are also opportunities to undertake off-site placements at some of our other business units – something which we strongly encourage and support
The training you will be getting
- Aside from gaining diverse work experience, across this 6-year programme, you will gain Performing Engineering Operations Units (Foundation Workshop Training) and a Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing Degree (BEng)
- Your technical training will be supplemented with in-house training courses and soft skill training to help you develop your personal and team working skills
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
- Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you will move into a substantive position within the business
- At the end of the programme you will be at Engineer grade, identical to your peers who have attended university, completed our graduate programme and are working to become our future Lead Engineers and Design Managers within the business
