What you will do in your working day

You’ll learn on the job, gaining vital hands on experience at our technologically advanced power stations around the UK whilst getting paid for it. What’s more, in years 1 and 2 you’ll gain formal Engineering training and qualifications with an offsite training provider (living away from home whilst studying), in years 3 and 4 you’ll gain a HNC qualification and will continue your operations and maintenance development at one of our Power Plants in the South East.
We have teams of highly talented and experienced Operators and Engineers - who you’ll be learning from directly. There’s a real community feel - as you’ll be one of a number of Apprentices on the same career path together.

This apprenticeship covers a range of skillsets and disciplines including mechanical, electrical, control and instrumentation, the chosen individual will specialise in one of these fields. So, if you’ve always been fascinated by how all things work and you love taking them apart and putting them back together again, this apprenticeship could be perfect for you.
Your main responsibilities may include:
- Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, spark erodes, grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
- Carry out daily machine safety checks on all Machinery, both manual and automated
- Carry out Preventative Maintenance on Machinery
- Carry out diagnosis and repairs of any faults on plant machines, which could include electrical, mechanical, Fluid power, PLC and automation faults
- Read tooling drawings and produce detailed components within specified tolerances
- Supporting the Installation and development of new processes
The training you will be getting
Together with invaluable commercial and practical experience, you’ll gain several academic and vocational qualifications throughout your time with us, which are fully paid for, including:
- Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) - off the job full time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham in year 1
- Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence)
- Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
- In house training in line with your requirements
The apprenticeship includes a residential programme in year 1 at Make UK's state of the art facility to complete your Foundation Competence qualification and then in years 2 - 4 you will attend Make UK on block release to complete your classroom based qualifications (BTEC and HNC)
What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship
At the end of your Apprenticeship, you’ll have some impressive qualifications under your belt, including a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering, a NVQ Level 3 in an Engineering discipline and a HNC qualification. This will enable you to gain rounded experience that could open up career opportunities including support for further education - even a degree! And, you’ll be well on your way to becoming an Operator / Maintainer with real work experience behind you - even better you won’t have built up any debt.
Get qualifications and experience - and get paid! Your starting salary will be £15,709 and this will increase every 12 months subject to satisfactory performance, so in the fourth year, you could be earning over £27,000 and once graduated be earning over £37,000.
