What you will do in your working day

As a Software Engineer Apprentice you will develop key skills and experience in the following:

  • Programming skills in C or C++
  • Knowledge of OpenGL, graphics programming and mathematical systems modelling
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplined agile environment Familiarity with requirements management tools, aircraft and sensor systems and training simulator systems
  • New tools and infrastructure used for the development engineering environment
  • Development of quality software solutions that adhere to timescale and budget
  • Domain specific knowledge and application of mathematics skills to model aircraft and simulation systems
  • Opportunity to develop creative software solutions
  • Organisational skills with well-rounded communication and relationship building abilities
  • Digital Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics

The training you will be getting

  • Through our Level 4 apprenticeship you’ll be making the most of your talents, getting to understand software engineering from the ground up; and doing so with the help of one of the biggest and best names in the industry.
  • As a Software Engineering Apprentice you will be studying towards a Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship with QA Training over 18 months.
  • For your first 10 weeks on programme you will attend a full time Talent Accelerator Bootcamp introducing you to the core basics needed to be successful in role. The remaining 46 weeks will be spend in the workplace embedding your learning and working alongside Thales software engineers. At the end of the programme you will go through an End Point Assessment before achieving a Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship qualification.
  • There may be scope to progress onto a Level 6 Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship (Software Developer Pathway) for those who demonstrate the desired attitude, motivation, commitment and skill set. This would be a 24 month top up to a BSc in Digital and Technology Solutions, delivered by QA Training in partnership with Roehampton University.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

  • Will qualify with a Level 4 Software Developer certificate and be a permanent engineer with the Thales business.
