The successful applicant, will be trained to operate and maintain, under supervision, a range of duties to ensure the highest standards of roadworthiness, maintaining health and safety and legislative requirements.

What you will do in your working day

  • Assist in dealing with a comprehensive range of mechanical works in the undertaking of maintenance, inspection, service and repair works to vehicles and equipment in the Council’s Garage and to complete various service records in relation to the servicing, inspection and all works undertaken to vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist in attending vehicle breakdowns and diagnose vehicle defects to determine serviceability of vehicle, recover vehicle breakdowns and to undertake minor repairs on the road side.
  • Assist in undertaking vehicle safety checks and inspections, including ‘Operating Licence’ inspections on HGV vehicles as required and prepare for Ministry of Transport tests and inspections.
  • Assist in ensuring the timely requesting of parts and equipment required in the undertaking of servicing and/or repairs to the Workshop Stores Coordinator.

The training you will be getting

  • Upon completion, the apprentice will gain a Level 2 Autocare Technician qualification
  • The training provider will be Exeter College 
  • One day a week will be spent on the college campus - please consider travel routes
  • Functional skills if needed

NB: The Council may be able to assist with use of our vehicles if the applicant holds a driving licence. 

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Whilst there is no guarantee of a permenant position at the end of this apprenticeship, there is a possibilty that a position may become available to apply for. 

There may also be the possibility to progress to higher level apprenticeships upon completion of the Level 2.
