What will the apprentice be doing?

You will be caring for a variety of sites in the local area, travelling from our main depot in Welwyn Garden City in a commercial vehicle to maintain properties that range from NHS sites to prestigious commercial offices.  Using commercial petrol and electric grounds maintenance machinery, your duties will include:

  • Grass cutting
  • Strimming
  • Leaf clearance
  • General maintenance to shrub beds
  • Soft landscaping
  • Hard landscape repairs
  • White line marking
  • Hedge cutting
  • Winter gritting and snow clearance

Our maintenance jobs recorded using an app on a Company smartphone which is used to provide evidence of our visit and of your workmanship.

You will return to our depot at the end of the day to dispose of green waste, return tools, tidy the works vehicle and report defective tools or issues on site.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

After completing your apprenticeship, you would have been trained in:

  • First Aid at Work
  • Pesticides Spraying PA1
  • Pesticides Spraying PA6
  • Certificate in completing the Horticulture Level 2 apprenticeship

You will be caring for a variety of sites in the local area of Welwyn Garden City.

The training at college will be one day a week at the Enfield Campus.

Functional skills in maths and English (if required).

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

All previous apprentices who have successfully completed their course and met performance standards have been offered a permanent role.

Once a permanent member of staff they will be offered the same level of training offered to other members of the workforce such as First Aid, ROLO, Lantra, PA1, PA6 herbicide license, and internal and external training as required.

Things to consider

The work is varied and carried out in all weathers. We generally do an early start (6am) one day a week and there is the opportunity for overtime on a Saturday at 1.5 x hourly rate. You will be expected to be physically fit and able to use a range of tools and machinery and work continuously under the supervision and guidance of other members of staff for several hours at a time. During winter season we may require the apprentice to work overtime in the evenings to complete winter gritting and snow clearance as weather dictates. We will provide the time, space and resources to allow the apprentice to complete any coursework necessary during their employment to meet their course/modules objectives.
