We have an exciting opportunity for a Process Operations Apprentice (Level 2) to join a team dedicated to the generation of Green Energy. You will be taken through every operational aspect of an Energy from Waste Plant, including introduction to maintenance. The scheme will provide the underpinning knowledge and experience to safely operate a large power plant. Duties include: operating the plant including:- weighbridge operation, shredders, conveyor systems, waste incineration, thermal recovery and steam generation.

What will the apprentice be doing?

We are looking for Process Operations Apprentices (Operational Apprentices) to be part of a large highly skilled Operations Team dedicated to safely operating the facility within our environmental limits.

Our apprentices need to have a practical approach with a logical ability to learn what it takes to operate a leading Energy from Waste Facility.

The successful candidates will:

  • Become part of the Health and Safety culture at Allington EfW
  • Trained in all aspects of plant operations and develop their technical competence to safely operate the plant include, weighbridge operation, shredders, conveyor systems, waste incineration, thermal recovery and steam generation, ash recovery systems, flue gas treatment, steam turbine and electrical generator operations
  • Develop the ability and confidence to responsibly accept and safely process waste using an integrated weighbridge facility, and Tipping Hall with large mobile vehicles and overhead cranes
  • Our Operations Apprentices will gain experience in providing front line maintenance and will receive an introduction to our mechanical and electrical departments and maintenance systems
  • The ability to safely carry out routine operational plant inspections and system checks with minimum supervision
  • Develop fault finding techniques to identify and rectify minor operational system faults across the full range of plant equipment
  • Trained to work safely unsupervised with the ability to prepare and work on risk assessments, operational procedures, and work method statements
  • The ability to support offloading of process materials (lime, carbon, and fuel) and collection of waste by products (bottom ash, fly ash and the recovery of ferrous metals).

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • This Apprenticeship Standard is delivered within the workplace, where the Apprentice will complete a Level 2 Lean Manufacturing Operative competency and knowledge qualification.
  • IPS will support and train the learner through the component aims with monthly monitoring and assessment visits to the workplace. This will prepare the learner for End Point Assessment that is required for this Apprenticeship. 
  • To complete this Apprenticeship, the learner must pass Level 1 English and maths (or have the appropriate transferable skills). 

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

  • Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, the Process Operations Apprenticeship at Allington EFW will provide the successful candidates with the opportunity to work at one of the UK’s leading Energy from Waste facilities and provide them with the knowledge, skills, and experience to become successful in power plant operations
  • This role could provide an opportunity for a full-time role within the Allington EfW Operations team. And/or the ability to work at other FCC Environment’s Energy from Waste facilities across the UK.
