On completion of this qualification you will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create a variety of looks and colour and lighten hair for ladies and men. You will be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with your role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.

You will undertake an End-point assessment of the mandatory skills, knowledge and behaviours specified in the standards via:

  • A practical assessment
  • Oral questioning

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

With experience you could become a senior stylist or salon manager. With further qualifications, you could also move into training or assessing student hairdressers. You could become self-employed or open your own salon.

If your skills are advanced enough and you're good at networking and willing to travel, your career path as a hairdresser could take you in a wide variety of directions, including some more unusual routes. Hair and beauty skills are in global demand, so you could see the world and work at the same time (provided that you speak the language anyway!). You could even work on cruise ships and military bases.

You could also combine your hair styling skills with training in makeup techniques. This would allow you to expand your career into other fields like TV, fashion and media, where the ability to work quickly and flexibly is especially important.
