What will the apprentice be doing?

We are looking for a commercial catering apprentice to join our business and work alongside other engineers, learning the trade and attending training courses to gain the necessary skills to eventually go out on their own to carry out service & maintenance to commercial catering equipment.

The apprentice will learn how to:

  • Diagnose faults with commercial gas and electrical catering equipment, including glass & dishwashers and how to carry out routine maintenance and gas safety inspection
  • They will be taught how to highlight faults, at risk situations and instances where equipment needs to be disconnected for Health & Safety reasons
  • They will follow processes for how to identify these faults, working safely and efficiently
  • They will also learn how to install new gas pipework, including gas interlock control systems for the safe operation of the kitchen and how to safely install, commission and operate the equipment to demonstrate to the customer how to use at the end of an installation
  • There is a heavier reliance on electrical equipment these days so there is more and more demand for installing these items, however it will not include running in new power supplies it will be connecting up to a local source of operation and testing
  • There will also be a small amount of water pipework as a lot of equipment requires a water supply and a drainage connection.
  • Fault finding, attention to detail, safe working practices and testing and high standards are required in this role where you will eventually have a very good understanding of gas, electricity and water
  • There may be a requirement for an apprentice to work overtime in the evenings or weekends, and once qualified there will be a requirement to be on standby rota and to work late at short notice if the job requires it

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

What is delivered?

  • Level 2 Foundation competence qualification (Practical units broad based skills)
  • Level 3 Development Competence qualification (Practical work based units)
