What will the apprentice be doing?
- Answering the telephone, dealing with basic telephone enquiries
- Taking messages and recording accurately and concisely
- Liaising between various departments and teams
- Conveying information/messages to the correct teams
- Input and management of department databases
- Creating word documents and typing protocols
- Maintenance of the electronic referral system dashboard
- Checking inpatient lists and urgent appointment allocation on the hospital systems
- Checking and actioning some of the teams’ emails
- Dealing with secretarial team mail – incoming/outgoing
- Dealing with basic secretarial tasks
- Keeping contact lists up to date.
- Admin tasks directed by the secretarial team which will include photocopying, typing letters, phoning departments, or sending emails, communicating with GPs and others within the practice.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
Level 3 Business Support Apprenticeship Standard, which includes:
- Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
- End-Point Assessment (EPA)
- Relevant training will be provided through Lancaster and Morecambe College
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
Following successful completion of the apprenticeship, the right candidate will have the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in medical secretary work. With experience:
- You will develop the skills and knowledge required to carry out duties within the medical secretarial department.
- You will learn referral pathways.
- How to make referrals.
- Support the secretarial team to send off and track referrals.
- Learn medical terminology and the importance of this in the role of the medical secretary.
- Learn about other health care settings and their roles in patient care.
- Learn the roles of other health care professionals both in general practice and the wider teams.
