What will the apprentice be doing?

Thurne is a leader in high speed slicing equipment, developing a succession of industry first slicers pioneering vision, scanning and computer technologies that benefit small family firms and large multi-site corporations. You will be working in the Parts Production Department.

You will be required to:

  • Machine high quality components guided by technical drawings
  • To set up and run a CNC machine
  • To program new jobs as and when required in the most efficient way possible
  • Assist in improving methods and productivity
  • Maintain safe working practices and high standards of housekeeping
  • Work effectively as part of a team

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

For the full apprenticeship, candidates will complete:

  • Level 3 EAL Extended Diploma in Machining (Development and Knowledge)

For the End Point Assessment (EPA) apprentices will undertake a practical demonstration with questions, a knowledge test and an interview underpinned by the portfolio.

This apprenticeship also aligns with the following professional recognition:

  • Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) for Engineering Technicians (EngTech)
  • Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for Engineering Technicians (EngTech)
  • Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) for Engineering Technicians (EngTech)

Apprentices must attend college sessions one day per week at the Ipswich Road campus, located near Norwich city centre.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

A position may be available for the right candidate following successful completion of the apprenticeship. The business is looking for somebody who wants to develop and gain a position following their apprenticeship.

Things to consider

Applicants who are currently undertaking or sitting GCSEs should include their predicted grades on their application. If successful for this position, you will be offered a conditional place on the apprenticeship, subject to you meeting the entry requirements listed above. The nature of the job role dictates that you will be working in a workshop environment. If you are successful at interview you will be asked to complete a work trial for one day. Transport will need to be considered. Once training is complete this job role operates on an alternative week shift basis one week early (06.00-14.00) one week late (14.00-22.00). Monday to Friday. A shift premium is paid. Please take this into consideration before applying. The salary for this post is reviewed at 6 monthly intervals.
