What will the apprentice be doing?

You will move around between three departments learning all aspects of each.

This role is to gain an understanding of both business sectors and use this knowledge to assist in the development, testing and colour matching of batches of paint. You will support the business in safely maintaining the highest quality products to satisfy customer and regulatory requirements.

Main duties will include:

  • To undertake practical laboratory work, including:
  • Paint formulation
  • Colour matching
  • Small scale paint manufacture
  • Raw material evaluation
  • Paint application (use of spray equipment and booths)
  • Physical testing of paints
  • Process inspections
  • Chemical resistance testing of paints
  • Product Integrity Testing
  • Preparation of external weathering samples
  • Record keeping including, writing reports, maintaining electronic records, archiving of approved samples and records
  • Assist with support work, including supervision of batches in production, auditing, investigation of production problems, testing and root cause analysis, customer complaints, and finding re-work outlets for redundant paint
  • Engage in proactive stock management
  • To be competent and fully compliant in the safe operation of equipment, including: general lab equipment & ovens, calibration of laboratory equipment, operation of accelerated weathering cabinets
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment through daily housekeeping inspections and adherence to 5S practices
  • Highlight unsafe conditions, taking reasonable care of oneself and others
  • To comply with Beckers Health and Safety policy and any Beckers procedures and rules that apply to your role
  • Adhere to the Becker’s code of conduct at all times
  • Promote and engage in the communication and implementation of Beckers’ values and culture

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

As an apprentice you will complete a Laboratory Technician Level 3 qualification with a national Training Provider.

Your apprenticeship Training will focus on your job, is completed at the workplace, and you will be allocated a tutor and a study session in your working week.

Components of the Laboratory Level 3 Apprenticeship:

  • Competence/Knowledge based qualification
  • Functional Skills - maths/English (if required)[AJ1] 
  • End Point Assessment – Final Knowledge Test, Observation and Discussion
