What will the apprentice be doing?

This is a varied role which includes regular garden maintenance as well as the chance to carry out a variety of landscaping tasks on garden makeovers. The role offers an ideal opportunity to develop a range of skills in a small, environmentally friendly company. Full training will be provided. Ad hoc discretionary payments may be available to reward exceptional work or achievement.

The role is mainly based around domestic garden maintenance and development. Duties will include:

  • Border maintenance and general weeding and plant care
  • Lawn mowing and trimming of edges
  • Planting of hedging and other plants
  • Pruning and hedge-trimming’
  • Scything
  • Digging and creation of flower or vegetable beds
  • Ground preparation and turf laying
  • Laying out garden designs from printed plans
  • Construction of structures such as pergolas, compost bins, raised beds
  • Installation of plant wires and metal lawn edging
  • Pressure washing and repointing patios and paths
  • Maintenance of tools
  • Respecting health and safety policies and working in a tidy manner

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Duration:

• 15 months practical training period, plus 3 months for End Point Assessment


Delivery model:


• Work-based training with your employer
• Approximately 12 on-site assessment visits per year
• 14 days college attendance to complete Horticulture Principles and Practice course
• 1 day college attendance to complete Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid course
• 2 days college attendance to complete Level 2 PA1 Pesticides course (theory)
• 2 days college attendance to complete L2 PA6 Pesticides course (practical)
• Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths and English (7 days at college for each, if required)
• Off the job training will count for at least 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s time at work.

• Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid
• Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides
• Level 2 Award In The Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Hand Held Equipment
• Level 2 Horticulture Operative Apprenticeship

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Promotion to Assistant Gardener on successful completion of the apprenticeship.


Progression onto at least NVQ level 3 / RHS Level 2 and beyond.

Our main emphasis is on providing a high quality maintenance service whilst caring for the environment. As such, we focus on traditional methods of maintenance such as scything, use hand tools rather than power tools where possible and make minimal use of chemicals. We also offer a design and construction service as well as carrying out garden makeovers. We are a small, friendly company trading mainly on local reputation and are currently experiencing steady growth.
