What will the apprentice be doing?

Nexus Education Schools Trust are looking to appoint an Apprentice Assistant Caretaker to work at Childeric Primary School in New Cross.  All our schools offer friendly and supporting working environments where you will play a big part in a hardworking and dedicated team. 

You will be involved in the following aspects of school life:

  • Security of school premises
  • Maintenance of heating and lighting system on-site
  • Cleaning and tidying of site
  • Ensuring site is fit for purpose
  • Associated health and safety reporting
  • Safeguarding of students
  • Routine and non-routine opening and closing of the school buildings and/or premises, including operation of alarms (both fire and security), reporting malfunctions as necessary and arranging for repairs to be carried out in a timely fashion
  • Support the caretaker in carrying out preventative and planned maintenance
  • Work safely with tools, ladders, maintenance equipment and materials
  • Ensure that stocks of cleaning materials, soap, paper towels, etc are maintained and replenished as necessary
  • Ensure that litter and graffiti are removed from both inside and outside the buildings
  • Undertake training in all aspects of caretaker duties
  • Communicate effectively face-to-face with staff, pupils and external customers
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues
  • Ensure the site is kept tidy throughout the year, carrying out regular sweeping of hard areas, removal of litter, leaves and any other superfluous materials and the removal of weeds
  • Ensure that light bulbs and fluorescent tubes are replaced as necessary, applying appropriate health and safety regulations
  • Ensure compliance with company safety procedures and statutory legislation
  • General cleaning and removal and transport of bulk refuse and furniture
  • Set up rooms for special events and school functions
  • Work on own initiative using problem-solving skills
  • Support and assist in the safe receipt, recording, storage, and distribution of deliveries

Training Provider: BROMLEY COLLEGE OF FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION.

  • Level 2 Property Maintenance Apprenticeship Standard
  • Level 1 and/or 2  Functional Skills in Maths and English
  • Institute of Apprenticeship Certificate

End-Point Assessment:

  • Synoptic practical assessment
  • Synoptic knowledge assessment
  • Interview

Things to consider

The post is fixed term and requires flexibility, with a commitment to completing duties in Trust timescales. There may be occasions where you are required to work later and, on a weekend, to provide support with events such as fetes, etc.
