What will the apprentice be doing?

Job description and main duties:

  • Operate several types of industrial sewing machines
  • Operate cutting machines
  • Identify various fabrics and webbings
  • Read drawings and technical manuals
  • Manufacture various survival products
  • Adhere to all H&S requirements

Working as a team and individually as part of a skilled Survival Equipment team, the apprentice machinist will be responsible for sewing of parachutes, harnesses and all other related fabric components connected to survival, by working to drawings, technical manuals and following set procedures.

Once trained and fully competent you will be actively involved with and responsible for the full process from cutting set patterns from raw materials right through to the correct packing and labelling of products.

You will generally work on small precision batches of products and so the work will be quite varied.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

All training will take place within the workplace with a dedicated Assessor visiting on a regular basis to carry out reviews, observations and set coursework targets.

You will work towards the Level 2 Sewing Machinist Standard, and this may also include maths and English Functional skills (though this is dependent on your GCSE grades or equivalent and could be exempt).

You will have an e-portfolio for submitting your work and you must log your Off the Job Training on a daily basis.
