    Monday to Friday with some weekend work as and when needed for busy times. Shifts will start between 7:30am - 9:30am dependant on type of day (cheesemaking/non-cheesemaking). Shifts will be for 6.5 hours including a 1/2 unpaid lunch break

What will the apprentice be doing?

  • Sterilising pasteuriser
  • Assisting the head cheesemaker with the daily make
  • Overseeing & executing as needed cleaning before and during production
  • Contributing ideas & effort towards increasing the efficiency & quality of the cheese room
  • Full clean of the cheese room after each make and at the end of the week
  • Maturing/affinage of three kinds of cheese
  • Wrapping and labelling
  • Helping develop and test new cheeses for the market
  • Working on the sales and distribution team to grow the market for Feltham’s Farm cheese 

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • A Level 2 Food and Drink Process Operator qualification will be achieved on completion
  • Functional Skills in maths and English if required
  • Training will take place both online and in person
  • Strode College will be managing the applications for this apprenticeship

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Things to consider

The business is very rural with no access to public transport, so this must be taken into consideration. You must have a passion for cheesemaking and a good sense of smell is essential.

About the employer

Feltham’s Farm is 22 acres of organic land in the north of Somerset’s beautiful Blackmore Vale. It is run by Marcus Fergusson and Penny Nagle, who moved here six years ago. There are always people around, as our cheese business employs between two and four people while living on-site there are up to four international volunteers at any time. This is a community of people interested in good food, sourced both locally and organically.
