What will the apprentice be doing?

  • Working from engineering drawings, data and documentation in order to undertake the manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, fault diagnosis, maintenance, overhaul and removal of mechanical and fluid power equipment
  • This can include propulsion machinery and auxiliary systems (such as water, air conditioning and power generation). It requires knowledge and expertise in the use of common and specialist machine and hand tools, and the use of a variety of measuring and diagnostic equipment and processes to ensure individual components and assemblies meet the required specification
  • The Mechanical Fitter must comply with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements and will be expected to work both individually and as part of a team
  • On completion of the Apprenticeship they will be able to work with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the work they undertake and will be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying areas to improve business processes

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • Apprentices will undertake a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard programme. This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton
  • You will begin a technical certificate (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week over two academic years. After your initial training at SETA, you will be with your employer working on developing your skills for your End Point Assessment

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

  • To progress into a qualified tradesperson engaged in engineering projects across the business

Things to consider

Travel to and from SETA training and workplace, Shift works can be day or night, at weekends, outdoors and during inclement weather. SMS works in various locations throughout the UK and travel away from home for periods of time will be required.
