What will the apprentice be doing?

Attitude is key to success within TW, those that thrive have a ‘can do’, proactive, customer-focused approach and look for the ‘what, where and how things could be done better?’

We can train the technical, we can provide the opportunities, we can help in being organised, but we think the right attitude is one where apprentices are prepared to ‘have a go’, take the initiative and, when they think it’s necessary, challenge the status quo.

As well as an aptitude for figures, you need to be able to build and retain relationships, provide advice and guidance, and use the information from the software to be able to add value to our clients by planning ahead and sharing ideas.

We would love to hear from those who are:

  • Motivated to make the most of their abilities
  • Confident, with great interpersonal skills
  • Team players who enjoy sharing their knowledge with others
  • Forward thinking and solutions focused

We invest a huge amount of time ensuring our trainees are given the opportunities to develop alongside study support. As part of the TW team, you will have the opportunity to experience a wide range of business / accountancy / IT processes whilst developing your skills and knowledge plus you’ll benefit from exposure to a varied customer base.

Duties include:

  • Daily preparation of accounts to review stage, with assistance from your mentor
  • One on one training with your mentor with each stage of an accounts job
  • Use of the cloud software, Xero in the preparation of accounts and VAT jobs
  • Exposure to VAT returns and bookkeeping processes to see the process through to the accounts completion stage
  • Responsible for your own workload, ensuring you complete each job by the agreed timescale
  • Working as a team to ensure the work is delivered to clients in a timely manner

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Formal training is delivered at HWGTA, located in Hereford (HR4 9SX)

You will receive training one day per week which is a combination of face-to-face and remote, as per your assigned training plan.

Additional training for functional skills in English and Maths will be undertaken if needed. You will receive monthly visits from your assigned Learning and Development Specialist, who will set you work, monitor your development and wellbeing, and discuss training sessions. They will also prepare you for your End Point Assessment to gain your Accounts / Finance Assistant Level 2 qualification.

There is also a five-day teambuilding residential trip that is held in the spring of each year offered to all apprentices on programme.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Many of our apprentices have stayed with the company for many years, progressing up through the levels and becoming Client Managers. Our own CEO, Dan Crowther started off with Thorne Widgery as an apprentice just like you.
