As part of the apprenticeship, you will undertake the relevant training on plant protection to allow you to undertake crop spraying and the application of biological controls.

What will the apprentice be doing?

  • Maintaining crops weed, pest and disease free
  • Regular crop walking for pest and disease monitoring
  • Ensuring correct environmental control is monitored, including watering and venting
  • Ensuring cultural activities are carried out to stated timescales and to an agreed standard, including trimming, weeding, feeding, moving, and spacing
  • Communicating the availability of areas for Crop Protection applications.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Level 2 Awards in:

  • Safe Use of Pesticides

On completion of the pesticides foundation unit above also choose
one of the following units:

  • Boom sprayer, mounted, trailed or self-propelled equipment
  • Granular applicator equipment
  • Handheld applicator equipment
  • Level 3 award in Emergency First Aid at Work
  • Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE grade 4 or C or
    above) will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end point
    assessment
  • Qualification achieved: Crop technician, Level 3

Things to consider

Role involves working outside or under protected greenhouse structures where temperatures fluctuate with ambient weather conditions through the year. Need to be reasonably fit as role involves pulling hose reels and walking around large sites. All crops are grown on the floor, regular bending to undertake essential tasks.
