What will the apprentice be doing?

  • Attend to the wishes and comfort, personal appearance and hygiene of residents at all times. Care for residents who are unwell or at the end of their life, with supervision.
  • Take and chart observations of residents including weight, food and liquid intakes/output. Complete charts and care records as directed.
  • Assist and actively encourage social care and the well-being of residents. Contribute to the development of new ideas in care and in respect of stimulation for residents to improve their quality of life.
  • Assist with the reception and orientation of new residents in a reassuring manner.
  • Prepare food trays and eating areas. Prepare residents for meals and provide assistance to residents with eating, as required.
  • Tidy residents’ rooms and cupboards, keeping clothing and possessions in order.
  • Make beds and change bed linen. Dispose of soiled linen in accordance with Home Procedures. Bag linen for collections.
  • Escort residents to hospital, dentist, shops, or other approved excursions, as required.
  • Ensure that all residents receive Person Centred Care.
  • Answer call bells, the front door, greet visitors

Things to consider

There is a 12 week induction period for all staff. Staff will be trained in the following areas so they have the correct skills and knowledge to provide excellent care. Induction will include training in: Health and Safety, Moving and Handling, First Aid, Fire Safety, Food Hygiene, Infection Control, Equality and Diversity, Mental Capacity Act, Dementia training, vulnerable adults at risk training. To complete the care certificate Undertake an Adult Care Level 2 apprenticeship. To use the whistle blowing policy to ensure no person is at risk in the care home and to take the correct actions. For example, immediately inform the manager and if necessary the manager will raise a safeguarding alert. To ensure that Equality and Diversity is practised within the care home by all who live, work and visit the care home. Any issues to be promptly reported to the Manager/Deputy.
