What will the apprentice be doing?

The main function of the apprenticeship role will be learning to operate and program CNC milling and CNC turning machine centres. The role will first include attending the AMRC Training Centre to obtain foundation level engineering knowledge and skills that can be transferred to a production shop floor working as part of a team.

Principle role & responsibilities:

  • Setting fixtures on the machining centres
  • Setting tools
  • Setting machine datums
  • Machine operating
  • Proving out programs
  • Editing machine offsets
  • Part deburring
  • Carrying out inspection checks
  • Maintaining machine tolerances
  • Interpreting engineering drawings
  • Collaborating with inspectors to ensure drawing tolerances are achieved
  • Self-management of workload
  • Machine maintenance
  • Material handling
  • Operating CMMs and manual inspection equipment
  • Analysing inspection reports and feeding back to operators
  • Learning how to verify checks
  • Verification of tooling

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge)

After a further period of skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)

You will study on a Level 3 Engineering Technician standard on a Machinist - Advanced Manufacturing Engineer pathway.  On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Advanced Level 3 standard.

During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. After this, you will attend the Training Centre for one day a week for knowledge study.

Completion of the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre apprenticeships are nationally recognised qualifications which are acknowledged and respected by employers across the world.
