What will the apprentice be doing?

The club has a variety of landscapes that require looking after, everything from formal gardens, sports turf on greens and tennis courts

Daily duties will include:

  • Cut tees, greens, fairways, rough, semi rough and tennis courts
  • Set up the golf course, including changing holes, moving tee markers
  • Line marking of tennis courts
  • Indicating drop zones and hazards
  • Switch and brush greens
  • Apply top dressing and fertiliser
  • Identify and control pests and diseases
  • Renovate damaged turf
  • Maintain machinery

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Training by day release to Shipley College working towards Level 2 Golf Greenkeeper apprenticeship standard.

Maths and English functional skills if required.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

This standard is recognised by the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), the Professional Body for Greenkeepers. At the start of the apprenticeship the apprentice will be registered with BIGGA. Upon completion of this standard the apprentice will be eligible to join BIGGA as a full member and become a BIGGA Accredited Greenkeeper.

The successful apprentice will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard.

Job opportunities will also be enhanced for those apprentices who have completed the programme with promotion to more senior positions within a golf club facility or the option to progress by working in other sports facilities such as a Grounds Maintenance Operator/Technician.

About the employer

Rawdon Golf & Lawn Tennis Club is a friendly sports club located approximately six miles north-west of Leeds city centre. The golf course is a unique nine-hole parkland course with undulating tree-lined fairways and tricky greens. Although measuring only 5,886 yards in length, the par of 72 is a good indicator of the challenge the course offers to golfers of all abilities. The club is also home to three floodlit all-weather, three grass and three mini grass tennis courts.
