  • Annual wage

    £10,982.40

    The successful candidate will be paid above the national minimum wage, this will be negotiated on completion of application, depending on age of the candidate.

  • Working week

    The typical working week will Monday to Friday, plus 1/5 weekend mornings, once the candidate has been sufficiently trained. Summer hours are 6am-3pm including paid breaks and half an hour unpaid dinner break. Winter hours are 6.30am-2.30pm.

What will the apprentice be doing?

The successful candidate will be trained in all aspects of golf course care and maintenance, including course set up (moving markers, changing holes, raking bunkers) Other aspects of the job include mowing, understanding agronomical principals, machine maintenance, irrigation use, drainage and many more.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Training will be provided in the workplace through Myerscough College where you will work towards the Golf Greenkeeper Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard.

The apprenticeship is made up of a number of different nationally recognised qualifications which are as follows:

  • City & Guilds Certificate in Golf Greenkeeping
  • The qualification is made up of a number of mandatory units designed to have maximum relevance to the job & integrate with day to day responsibilities.
  • End assessment, conducted by an independent assessor, which include:
    • Knowledge test (30% of grading)
    • Personal statement & portfolio of evidence (20% of grading)
    • Course walk & practical end assessment 5 – 6 hours (50% of grading)
  • There will be 3 levels of achievement: Pass, Merit & Distinction.

This standard is recognised by the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA), the Professional Body for Greenkeepers. At the start of the apprenticeship the apprentice will be registered with BIGGA. Upon completion of this standard the apprentice will be eligible to join BIGGA as a full member and become a BIGGA Accredited Greenkeeper.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

A full-time position is available at VRA. On completion of the level two qualification, other qualifications can be explored helping you to progress through the industry to whatever level suits the individual.

Things to consider

It will be necessary for the individual to make their own way to the course. It is not serviced by public transport and is 2 to 3 miles from the nearest transport links. So own transport is essential. To ensure your application has the best chance of being considered for the vacancy you must provide information on all qualifications undertaken stating highest grades achieved in every subject, paying particular attention to maths and English. Along with this you need to state any previous work experience.
