What will the apprentice be doing?

The Science and Technology Facilities Council offer a number of apprenticeships. The unique nature of the work undertaken at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory contributes to an interesting enjoyable and rewarding period of training in one of the world’s leading scientific and engineering research organisations.

ISIS Neutron and Muon Source at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire, are looking to recruit an Installation Electrician Apprentice to join us in September 2023.

Working as part of the ISIS Electrical Services Group, your main duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Complete a prescribed programme of training to be conducted at ISIS, within STFC
  • Work under the guidance and support of your team within ISIS at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
  • Work safely in line with established safety measures in the laboratory on a day-to-day basis
  • Become proficient in the maintenance of complex electrical LV systems and associated electrical equipment
  • Obtain a high level of competence in Electrical Installation tasks whilst working on a range of advanced electrical projects
  • Obtain a high level of competence in the testing and inspection of low voltage electrical circuits
  • Gain the skills to confidently and competently undertake fault diagnosis on a range of low voltage electrical equipment and systems
  • As an STFC Apprentice you will communicate with staff across STFC at all levels. You will work as part of a team as well as working on your own. You will also have contact throughout your apprenticeship with college tutors and visitors to site
  • Champion the ISIS Electrical Services Group in a positive manner
  • Deliver a high level of customer service
  • Attend appropriate additional training to support the role and service delivery

STFC are looking for candidates who have achieved or are predicted to achieve 5 GCSE passes at Grade C/4 or above including Maths, English and a STEM subject by September 2023 (or equivalent qualifications).

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Through the training provider, Newbury College, you will undertake a Level 3 Electrical Installation and Maintenance apprenticeship standard which will include:

  • Fully recognised apprenticeship qualification – Level 3 Electrical Installation and Maintenance
  • On-the-job competency training
  • Theoretical knowledge 

You will be required to attend Newbury College on a day release basis as part of your training; you must therefore be willing and able to travel independently. Excess travel and subsistence costs will be covered.

The Level 3 Installation Electrician and Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship completes the industry recognised EAL Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification over a four-year period. At the end of the four-year training period you will sit the AM2 electrical trade assessment as well as the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. You will also be required to sit an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of your Apprenticeship and will have a Development Coach from Newbury College who will oversee and support you throughout.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

  • This Apprenticeship could lead to a permanent position with STFC as part of the ISIS Electrical Services Group on successful completion of the Level 3 Installation Electrician and Maintenance Electrician Standard. Progression will be discussed on completion
