What will the apprentice be doing?
To train as an Engineering apprentice, to undertake a structured training program of academic study on the Job training to gain the required skills and knowledge to support the engineering department. Engineering apprentices will perform duties safely and be trained in a range of mechanical/ electrical skills, under the day-to-day supervision of a Mentor who would be an experienced Engineer as designated by the Engineering manager. An assessor through the college, who would typically come out to visit in the workplace to assess workplace competence.
Responsibilities:
- Perform simple repairs and maintain electrical equipment’s like motors, control circuits, electrical wiring
- Perform simple preventative maintenance on equipment’s
- Fill out checklist and records after completing the works
- Learn complex tasks and ability to work well with your hands
- Maintain housekeeping and keep areas clean
- Work with hand and power tools (wrenches, ratchets, sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, drill machine, grinders) and test equipment – meter’s
- Knowledge of engineering science and technology
- Understand hazards and risks in the work environment and keep safety as top priority
- Use a computer and understand some basic software like Word and Excel
- Ability to understand schematics, electrical codes, and technical drawings
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
The practical period of the Apprenticeship is dedicated to the development of the knowledge, skills and behaviours:
- Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
- EAL Diploma in Engineering Technologies
- EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Engineering Maintenance
During the first year of the apprenticeship, you will spend 3-days in-college during term-time and 2 days spent in the Workplace. Into years 2 to 3 years, you will attend college 1 day per week and 4 days spent in the Workplace. Towards the end of the practical training period of apprenticeship the training will be all in the Workplace, preparing for the End Point Assessment.
