What will the apprentice be doing?

  • To lay bricks and blocks or utilise pre-manufactured elements such as brick slip system to construct walls

  • To carry out simple setting out, prepare and use mortar to complete the project to specification and required design

  • To learn how to use a trowel to lay bricks and mortar and seal foundations with damp-resistant materials. They use spirit levels/laser levels and plumb lines to check building alignment and use hammers, chisels, power tools and brick cutting machines to shape and trim bricks and blocks

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The company will work with you, the training provider and college to assist you in progressing through your Level 2 Bricklaying apprenticeship until your End Point Assessment which will be approximately two years after your start date. Your apprenticeship will be complete on the taking of the End Point Assessment, whether failed or passed, or by the date in the ’Apprenticeship Commitment Statement’, or whichever is the sooner. On completion of your apprenticeship, you will be able to apply for a full-time position within the company.

The apprentice on a daily basis will be working with experienced and trained tradespeople on learning the role of a bricklayer, what is expected of a bricklayer and the basic requirements of being a successful bricklayer.

If not already achieved, the apprentice will have to achieve Level 1 English and maths and take the test for level 2 prior to taking their end-point assessment


They will spend one week per month in college working on the theory and practise of different elements of brickwork that they may not have on the site that they are working on.



You will be attending college at Building Crafts College studying a Standards programme in Bricklaying in line with apprenticeship requirements. The Company may enrol you on other training courses during this period as the company sees fit.

They will form part of the Lyons & Annoot Award winning Apprenticeship Scheme, ‘’MentorMe’’, and be given the greatest opportunity to learn and train to be an outstanding trades person, as well as on completion applying for ongoing work with Lyons & Annoot and further progress in their careers

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

The opportunity on completion is that you will be a bricklayer, and to work on this trade in all manners of project types and locations. You will then have further opportunity to progress to setting out engineering and management if the desire so takes you.

Things to consider

This is a physically demanding job and he applicant needs to be prepared to work outside all year round and complete all jobs related to working on a site including labouring The successful applicant must be willing to attend college on the set dates and compete a portfolio of work as set by the college tutor.
