What will the apprentice be doing?
Plumbing and domestic heating technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. Plumbing and domestic heating technicians can find themselves working inside or outside a property. Customer service skills and being tidy and respectful are important qualities as they can often find themselves working in customers’ homes as well as on building sites.
The exact job depends on the employer, though all plumbers have the skills and knowledge to get the job done properly and safely.
A plumbing and domestic heating technician will be:
• Assembling pipes
• Cleaning water supplies
• Handling tools
• Cleaning job sites
• Assist in complex jobs
• First and second fixing
• Work alone or with little supervision
• Carry out accurate measuring, marking, cutting, bending and jointing of pipes
• Inspect and test installations
• Diagnose and fix faults
• Write reports
As you can see, the job is varied and interesting and can offer a challenging career. The training programme that you will be following as a JTL apprentice has been designed to help you by meeting and delivering training to these standards and expectations.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
As part of the JTL Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship, you'll be in full time employment with a local company receiving a decent wage from day one. You'll spend time learning your trade by gaining hands-on experience working on-site with your employer, as well as attending a JTL approved college or training centre to learn the theoretical knowledge you will need.
You will be working towards a level 3 apprenticeship. The apprenticeship comprises the following qualifications:
• City & Guilds or BPEC Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Qualification
• Industry certifications specific to fuel type
• Functional skills may be required to be undertaken at the following levels if you do not have equivalent qualifications (such as GCSEs) at time of starting the apprenticeship: Level 2 English and Level 2 maths
Once you have successfully completed the training and qualifications, JTL and your employer will decide when you are ready to take the End Point Assessment (EPA). The EPA for this apprenticeship consists of a multiple-choice test, a design project, a practical installation test, a practical application test and a professional discussion.
