What will the apprentice be doing?

The apprenticeship runs for four years.

The first year is Basic Training, fulltime at SETA Ltd in Southampton. You will learn, hands-on, all aspects of engineering principles and practices e.g. fabrication, fitting, turning, milling and electrical. In addition, you will commence a Level 3 Diploma in Engineering.

The second and third-year will be based at Pall Aerospace's Manufacturing facility in Redruth, Cornwall. These two years are designed to provide you with the expertise, confidence and ability to work within a variety of functions across the aerospace business, and develop the capabilities required as a Technician Apprentice in engineering in a real world setting. In these two years your duties will include:

•              Practical machining skills so that you learn how to design for manufacture

•              Rotations around the factory to give you insight in how the business operates

You will also study for an HNC in Mechanical and Production Engineering at Truro College, on a day release basis over these two years.

The fourth-year will be based in the design office at Pall’s Portsmouth facility, where your duties will include:

•              Design and drafting

•              3D CAD (CATIA)

•              Analysis

•              Technical reports

These skills will serve you in your ongoing career as a Design Technician and Engineer.

You will also begin an HND in Mechanical Engineering at South Downs College in Hampshire.

You will conclude your apprenticeship as a Design Technician and join the engineering team based at either Redruth or Portsmouth (Appropriate vacancy dependant).

This vacancy is for one position at the Portsmouth location and one at the Redruth location after the apprenticeship, please ensure you take this into account when applying.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Apprentices will undertake a L3 Design and Draught (Mechanical) Standard programme. This includes a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off the job’ training at SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton.

Dependant on your previous qualifications you will required to undertake functional skills L2 in mathematics and English.

After your initial training at SETA, you will work with your employer to develop your skills for your End Point Assessment.

You will also begin a technical certificate (depending on your prior attainments) where you will be required to attend Truro College one day a week over two academic years. After your initial training at SETA, you will work with your employer to develop your skills for your End Point Assessment.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

It is hoped that the successful applicant will stay and grow their experience with Pall Corporation, progress onto a fully sponsored degree and begin a successful career in engineering. There are many progression opportunities to develop into more senior engineering roles as experience is gained.
