What will the apprentice be doing?
If your ambition is to become a qualified Electromechanical (Electrical/Mechanical) Technician with the skills to repair and maintain every aspect of one of the UK’s largest container terminals, then you are the person we need to ensure our company stays at leaders in our industry. In return we will help you to gain not only a recognised Apprenticeship Standard, agreed with our local provider, which includes an NVQ Level 3 and a BTEC Level 3, but also additional certification, to enhance your personal development in the role, you will gain:
· HNC Level 4
· Four City & Guilds certifications in; Hydraulics, Engines, Transmissions & Electrics
D.P World Southampton needs a team of highly skilled Engineering Technicians to maintain and repair a varied fleet of mechanical and electrical equipment to support the daily operations of the business. The engineering team carry out regular planned maintenance tasks to keep the fleet fully operational and reliable, including the use of specialist testing equipment such as ultrasound, thermography and vibration analysis. Technicians will attend breakdowns of equipment and repair on the spot where possible and if not will recover the equipment to work on in the workshops. Our Technicians will test and repair key components of our equipment in house where possible because as a business we know it’s important to reduce the amount of waste materials we produce.
You will:
· Learn a range of skills from some small electronics works, through to general electrical maintenance and installation and high voltage inspections
· Learn a range of skills from some small mechanical works, through to much larger mechanical maintenance and installations including engines and generators.
· Use your new basic welding and fabrications skills to build small one-off items
· Use your hydraulics knowledge to replace rams and control solenoids
· Experience inspection of crane components operating on 6600 volts
· Learn how to use testing equipment such as infrared, thermography and ultrasound
· Work on 15 quay container cranes, 84 straddle carriers, 8 empty container handlers, and a fleet of small vehicles
· Gain an NVQ Level 3, BTEC Level 3, HNC Level 4, 4 x City & Guilds certifications: Hydraulics, Engines, Transmissions & Electrics
You will receive the following competitive salary:
· Year 1: £226 per week / £11,764 per annum
· Year 2: £331 per week / £17,257 per annum
· Year 3: £370 per week / £19,241 per annum
· Year 4: £455 per week / £23,684 per annum
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
Apprentices will undertake a Level 3 Maintenance and operations engineering technician Apprenticeship Standard program, this will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA in the first year.
You will then be at D.P World Southampton four days a week & SETA one day a week to achieve technical certificates in BTEC Level 3 Electrical Engineering, NVQ Level 3 Engineering Maintenance and HNC Level 4 general Engineering.
Your apprenticeship is finished off with an End Point Assessment (EPA)
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
Once qualified as a technician there are endless opportunities to progress such as; becoming Team Leaders, Managers, Heads of Departments, Apprentice Mentors, Engineering Trainers, and Specialists in reliability, ultrasound or thermography. Perhaps you would like to work abroad in other D.P World terminals or go on to do an engineering degree.
