What will the apprentice be doing?

To be trained as highly skilled machinists (both manual and CNC) producing complex, precision machined components from large scale forgings and castings for a range of industries in a heavy engineering context. 

Role & responsibilities:

  • Set and run the relevant machine
  • Self-check inspection and parts produced
  • Assist in loading and off-loading parts to the relevant machine
  • Inspect components produced
  • Adjust the machining equipment or programme and tooling to ensure components meet quality requirements
  • Identify, communicate and report issues affecting machining component quality, quantity and deadlines
  • Set up, operate, adjust or edit conventional or CNC machining equipment settings and programmes for the machine tool being used
  • Machine high-quality complex components using a broad range of processes, eg. internal or external thread cutting, slots and pockets, internal or external under cutting. Also profile forms, tapered and eccentric diameters, bored holes and tee slots
  • To always promote health & safety in the workplace, displaying excellent personal safety and challenging others when unsafe behaviour is observed
  • All other duties commensurate with the role

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development, all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge)

After a further period of skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)

During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. After this, you will attend the Training Centre for one day a week for knowledge study.

Completion of the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre apprenticeships are nationally recognised qualifications which are acknowledged and respected by employers across the world.
