What will the apprentice be doing?

Role and responsibilities:

  • Operate CNC lathes and machining centres manufacturing parts to satisfy existing orders
  • Develop prototype parts for potential new business
  • Use cylindrical grinding between centres to satisfy existing  orders and develop prototype parts
  • Setting and operating a range of manual and CNC machines to gain experience and develop knowledge of CNC control systems (primarily Siemens 840D)
  • Working with standard operating procedures
  • Understand engineering drawings (geometric tolerancing) and SPC charts

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

After a period of foundation skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
  • Level 2 Diploma in Machining (Foundation Knowledge)

After a further period of skills and technical knowledge development all apprentices will be required to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) - Machining
  • Level 3 Diploma in Machining (Development Knowledge)

You will study on a Level 3 Engineering Technician standard on a Machinist - Advance Manufacturing Engineer pathway.  On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Advanced Level 3  standard.

During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis. After this, you will attend the Training Centre for one day a week for knowledge study.

Completion of the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre apprenticeships are nationally recognised qualifications which are acknowledged and respected by employers across the world. These can open the door to many more opportunities, such as Engineering Management and Project Engineering positions across a range of sectors worldwide.
