"Working with the radiological protection team, the successful candidate will contribute to the safety of personnel on site by carrying out measurements and analysis of the radiological hazards associated with nuclear decommissioning. They will work towards providing oversight and setting the standards for a wide range of compliance activities on site, experiencing a multitude of developmental scenarios to create a varied and exciting opportunity at the forefront of work on site. They will be customer focussed, good at adapting to challenges and willing to continue to learn."
Site Information
Dungeness A Site is located on a 22 hectare site of special scientific interest on the Kent coast. The site stopped generating electricity in 2006 with a lifetime output of 120 terawatt hours. The site is now in its decommissioning phase and is making steady progress, including demolishing its turbine hall and decontaminating its ponds. Preparations and enabling activities are now underway at Dungeness to facilitate the removal and disposal of the boilers.
A Radiation Protection Technician provides radiological monitoring services at the work face within the nuclear industry to protect people, plant and the environment from the adverse effects of ionising radiation and contamination.
Radiation Protection Technicians use specialist instruments to carry out radiological protection monitoring for people, by taking readings of surface and airborne contamination levels and radiation dose rates, recording the readings detected and responding accordingly.
They also:
- Undertake radiological surveys, decontamination activities and prepare survey reports
- Prepare work locations to ensure control of radiological hazards
- Ensure staff abide by good radiological protection practices
- Maintain compliance with radiological standards

- Length of training – 24 months
- Training will be delivered via 3 weeks block release
Qualifications
Apprentices are required to undergo training, gain experience and achieve a recognised safety qualification for example to an Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Working Safely or Safety Passport standard.
