Hear from the Hiring Manager

"This is an exciting opportunity at Oldbury to join the Radiation Protection/ Operations department. We are looking for motivated team workers eager to safely and efficiently assist in the daily running of the site."

Site Information

Oldbury Site is located on a 39-hectare site on the bank of the River Severn in South Gloucestershire. It stopped generating in February 2012 after 44 years, generating 137.5 terawatt hours of electricity. The site completed defueling in 2016 and moved into its decommissioning phase. Progress has been made in the former cooling ponds and an alternative electrical supply has been installed on the site, allowing disconnection from the national grid. Priorities are completion of ponds decommissioning work and retrieving, packaging and conditioning other forms of radioactive waste on site. Conventional demolition work will also begin to reduce the footprint of the site.

A Radiation Protection Technician provides radiological monitoring services at the work face within the nuclear industry to protect people, plant and the environment from the adverse effects of ionising radiation and contamination.

Radiation Protection Technicians use specialist instruments to carry out radiological protection monitoring for people, by taking readings of surface and airborne contamination levels and radiation dose rates, recording the readings detected and responding accordingly.

They also:

  • Undertake radiological surveys, decontamination activities and prepare survey reports

  • Ensure staff abide by good radiological protection practices
  • Maintain compliance with radiological standards
