Berkeley site is currently decommissioning and as part of this task, radioactive waste, produced during the site’s generation phase of operation, is being processed into packages for storge. The electrical, control and mechanical systems used to retrieve and store the waste has been installed in the last 10 years and needs to be maintained by highly qualified engineers. The successful candidate will join the site engineering team. Your development will consist of off-site academic tuition combined with on-site, practical experience to produce a highly qualified, skilled, and motivated engineer. You will support the engineering team to ensure compliant and safe operations, through management of the plant maintenance to meet the site and company retrieval targets.
Site Information:
Berkeley Site is located on a 27-hectare site of special scientific interest on the bank of the River Severn in Gloucestershire. The site generated 43 terawatt hours of electricity during its 27 years of operation and shutdown in 1989. Berkeley is in its decommissioning phase and has completed a number of key activities, including disposing of its 310 tonne boilers and entering both reactors into a safe store state. Priorities for the site now include removing all legacy wastes and emptying the active waste vaults.
A Mechanical Maintenance Engineer oversees and specifies the maintenance on mechanical systems and equipment. The Mechanical maintenance engineers play a key role in ensuring that the mechanical systems on the site function safely, efficiently & remain complainant with all statutory requirements.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Assist the Engineering Section Head to ensure that site plant is maintained and is suitably safe, efficient, and reliable
- Provide technical support for maintenance activities where required
- Provide technical support to current and future project design and implementation
- Provide technical input to ensure that plant performance and details of component defects are considered as part of the overall system or asset management and future investment strategy

Apprentice Mechanical Engineer - Nuclear Scientist & Nuclear Engineer (integrated degree) Apprenticeship Standard Reference: ST0289 - Level 6.

- Length of training - 48 months
- Training will be delivered via block release
On completion of the apprenticeship, the nuclear scientist and nuclear engineer will hold a Bachelors (Honours) degree qualification (at level 6), accredited by the constituent bodies of the Engineering or Science Council. The degree will have a minimum of 60 relevant nuclear based credits (1/6 of total credits).
