What will the apprentice be doing?

As a Welder/Fabricator apprentice at Newspace you will mainly be working in our fabrication workshop, day to day duties will include:

  • Being responsible for your health and safety in the workplace
  • Ensure any PPE used is checked and in good condition
  • Following drawings and instructions for each job
  • Check dimensions of materials to be welded
  • Safely Operate welding equipment
  • Visually inspect welded joints
  • Cut and fit various types of doorways, windows into metal units using plasma cutters and or angle grinders
  • Check each job and sign off to an acceptable standard before passing to next department
  • Mig weld at a bench and in situ. Horizontal and vertical welding (vertical down)
  • Check each job and sign off to an acceptable standard before passing on to next department
  • Regular communication with supervisor or chargehand on progress
  • Keep tools, equipment and work areas clean

Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

Things to consider

This is a physically demanding role in a manufacturing environment but highly suitable for someone who wishes to work within the metal fabrication industry. Hard work and dedication will be required to become successful and learners will be expected to work on 2 or 3 qualifications at the same time. There is an expectation that the learner will contribute towards production from the second year onwards. Completion of the program along with a positive attitude and commitment holds a strong potential for continued employment and progression as failure to complete the program with result in a failure to remain in employment.
