What will the apprentice be doing?

Joining the Operations Team means that you will be at the forefront of all EQUINIX does, maintaining the electrical and mechanical infrastructure as part of a team delivering excellent service to customers ‘across the various sites. As part of the role, you will:

  • Attend college and achieve. Everything you learn in the classroom will be put into practice in your job
  • Work to complete Site based Level 3 NVQ Portfolio Competence Building
  • Work with qualified technicians on Facility / Infrastructure Maintenance and perform preventative maintenance on site infrastructure (e.g. maintenance of primary infrastructures) under their supervision and guidance
  • Perform site inspections and monitor the building and data centre alarms
  • Complete site logs and gather data for permits, such as MOPs and scripts
  • Assist more senior staff with responding to all on-site incidents and act as guided
  • Potentially begin responding to basic incidents based on own knowledge and experience
  • Complete basic work requests and circuit installations
  • Contribute to ongoing infrastructure projects and carry out small works projects i.e. lighting upgrades under the supervision of qualified technicians

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

With an Apprenticeship at EQUINIX, you get to:

  • Build contacts, work with and learn from the specialists in the data centre industry
  • Be part of a company where there is a variety of activities to get involved with to compliment your development
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and Mathematics will need to achieve this level prior to completion of their apprenticeship

The Apprenticeship Standard you will be completing is Level 3 Installation Electrician and Maintenance Electrician (ST0152). You will attend college one day a week during Term Time (this day will be held at Newbury College, Berkshire or may be held at the workplace - this will be confirmed at interview). As well as support and mentoring from your colleagues in the workplace, you will also have teaching staff and a Development Coach from Newbury College who will monitor your progress and support you throughout your Apprenticeship. You will have regular reviews and will be required to complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) before you can achieve the Apprenticeship.

On completion of the Apprenticeship you will have achieved the Level 3 Electrotechnical Qualification (Installation) and will also have satisfied the requirements for registration as Eng Tech by the Engineering Council. You will also be fully qualified to work on electrical installations and data center infrastructure maintenance. 

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

We would like for this Apprenticeship to transform into a full-time EQUINIX employee. On successful completion of the Apprenticeship, we see people progressing to permanent members of our Engineering / Operations Team.
