What will the apprentice be doing?

As a metal fabricator (plater) you will be working towards occupational competency and have:

  • High level of fabrication and welding knowledge.
  • Ability to use GTAW, SAW, GMAW, FCAW, MMA welding processes at an appropriate level for your role.
  • Ability to manufacture to pressure vessel codes including but not limited to ASME, TSG (CHINA), PD5500.
  • Ability to manufacture to defence standards.
  • Good level of knowledge of LBBC Products.
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings.
  • Ability to read and understand weld procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with both internal and external ’customers’.
  • Ability to work unsupervised in a target driven environment and work to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to use standard measuring equipment. (circumferential tap, vernier calipers, weld gauge etc)
  • Ability to carry out pre-use checks. (Access equipment, welding sets etc)
  • Specific knowledge of LBBC Quality Manuals.  

Additionally, you will work towards having responsibilities:

  • To manufacture components to the correct specification with good workmanship achieving the budgeted hours or better.
  • To carry out in process inspections of your work ensuring required standard is achieved.
  • To complete all relevant project paper work including but not limited to route cards, welding records, time sheets ensuring full traceability is maintained.
  • To ensure good general housekeeping is maintained within the production areas.
  • To ensure all equipment and welding consumables are stored correctly.
  • To carry out pre-use checks and reporting issues to your line manager where necessary.
  • To ensure compliance is maintained to all LBBC Policies and procedures.
  • To ensure all operations are carried out in line with LBBC Quality manuals.
  • To strive to achieve and maintain a high level of technical capabilities in relation to fabrication and welding.

Metal Fabricator Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

Year one - day release at Appris training centre Bradford:

EAL Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Fabrication & Welding (Foundation Competence) 


Year two & three - day release at Appris training centre Bradford:

EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Fabrication & Welding (Development Knowledge)
Work based learning, mentoring & development throughout years one to four:

EAL Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Fabricator (Development Competence)
Additionally:

Functional Skills in maths and English, if required
Further learning and support for End Point Assessment (EPA)

This company is located in Pudsey, so please ensure you can arrange suitable transport for the start and finish times of the job. It also includes off-the-job training at Appris in Bradford, so please make allowances for the travel.
