What will the apprentice be doing?
You’ll be supported every step of the way not only by your line manager and maintenance colleagues but your own dedicated mentor.
Working alongside other technical experts you will apply a range of skills and knowledge to undertake a wide variety of ICA tasks including:
- Installation, maintenance, optimisation, and fault finding on critical engineering infrastructure
- You will be part of a wider team responsible for safety and efficient management of often complex instrumentation and control equipment
- Furthermore, you’ll undertake development, installation, commissioning, testing, fault diagnosis and repair of process critical automation hardware and software responsible for controlling out critical wastewater and water production assets and processes
What you will learn:
During your apprenticeship you will learn all aspects of ICA (instrumentation, control, and automation) including:
- Installation, maintenance, and fault finding of field instrumentation including specialist equipment such as dissolved oxygen monitors, chlorine monitors and flow metering.
- Routine maintenance and fault finding of PLC’s (Programmable Logic Controllers) and HMI’s (Human Machine Interface)
- Development and implementation of control modifications to our processes
- To work in a team of technical experts to continually optimise existing plant and processes

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
Within our ICA Maintenance Technician team you will complete the Level 3 Utilities Engineering Technician apprenticeship standard allowing you to develop the skills & experience required to become an expert within our ICA Maintenance Technician team.
You’ll combine on-the-job learning with formal, nationally recognised development training. A Personal Development Plan will help drive your career progression, set, agreed & regularly reviewed with your line manager.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
By the end of this programme, you will take up an electrical maintenance technician role, where you will be able to put your skills to action. You’ll be supported every step of the way, by your line manager and mentor for your career in Severn Trent.
